What matters more is that a choice is swiftly made about the nature of what is intended; do we want to create a necropolis or a phoenix? I venture to suggest that those hard-working men and women who were hard at work when death flew in through the window would be best served by the re-creation of a spectacular working environment, by the regeneration of the city they loved. That would be a finer memorial, surely, than any statue or garden or light-filled atrium in the sky: the sight of Lower Manhattan restored to its old vibrancy, the spectacle of New York looking, as it has always looked, towards the future and not the past.
