Great Britain in order to curb its immoral content from permeating society. Before all the controversy began, A Clockwork Orange was a novel, written mostly in russian, by Anthony Burgess. The film is an adaptation of the novel. That is, the movie is Stanley Kubrick’s interpretaion of the book. Stanley Kubrick is known to critics as a film maker who probes the dark side of human psyche. Kubrick has also directed films such as; Dr. Strangelove, The Shining, and Full Metal Jacket. In each of these movies, the audience delves into the evil side of the main character. Great Britain had this film removed from theaters across the country because scholars justly illustrated there was a connection between the movie’s graphic violence and an increased crime rate.

In Clockwork… there are unquestionablly violent and graphic actions. Multiple beatings, a rape, and a murder are performed by the lead characters. These crimes are drug induced. Before going out, the gang goes to the “milk bar” for some “milk plus” which is riddled with amphetamines. This is called “a bit of the old ultra violence” by Alex, the leader of the gang. The first violent act came not more than ten minutes into the movie. It was when the boys, led by Alex, beat a helpless wino that asked them for some change. The mob then strode away as if nothing occurred. They struck him repeatedly with canes, then they kicked him a few times to finish him up. Next, the boys went to see a rival gang. This other group was in the middle of raping some woman when Alex and Co. came in and intervened. They then proceeded to beat the other gang members to a pulp. Then, they went to the house of a writer, to burglerize it. While there, they brutilized the writer and his wife. Alex raped the wife in front of the writer, and then started to sing “Sing’n in the Rain” as he pummeled the old man. Alex’s final act of violence came at the house of a rich health spa owner. The gang went there with the intent of robbing the place, but the woman who lived there was alert to the scheme and called the police. She attacked Alex and he defended himself with a sculpture of male genitalia. The fight ended when Alex crammed the statue in the mouth of the victim, which killed her. These were some of the more graphic scenes, which probably aidded Britains decision to ban the film.

This movie alegedly spawned violence. Copycat crimes were reported, as well as an increased crime rate throughout the country. The most noteable copycat crime was in Britain where a woman was raped and beaten by a group of thugs who sang “Sing’n in the Rain” as they went.

Stanley Kubrick has been responsible for other films that are bleak, pessimistic and sometimes terrifying. That is simply his style. In his film Kubrick tries to convey a bit of his personal beliefs in that society is a very violent place, this film is no exception. In this effort Kubrick tried to explore the nature of violence, and satirize our crumbling society.

This film needed to be formally banned. Although It played to sellout crowds in London for nearly a year, it introduced weak moral standards and a glorification of violence to the public. This film was best recieved by the college aged youths of Great Britain. This is a very impresionable time in the life of a person. The British government made the right decision in banning the movie and protecting fragile moral standards in their nation.

Many believe that “A Clockwork Orange” was responsible for a wave of copycat crimes and an increase in crime rate. That is believable because out of the people who saw the film there was a percentage of copycat crimes. Eventhough this percentage may be minuscule, if this film was not viewed these haneous crimes may not have been commited. If the film had influence on certain people to comit crime than psycologically the perpitrators may have all ready been somewhat disturbed, but why should there be any reason to promote these feelings?

No matter how much violence is displayed on movies, society’s moral values should be high enough to tell right from wrong. If society lets itself be manipulated by movies and such than that just reflects how weak we really are.
